Designing a home involves hundreds, sometimes thousands, of decisions.
Some are big: how the kitchen should function, where to invest, what’s worth keeping. Others are small: grout color, sconce height, the edge profile on a countertop. Taken all at once, it’s overwhelming. Our job is making sure it never feels that way.
We listen before we lead.
We want to know how you live, what you love about your current home, which pieces have a story. The better we understand you early, the more confidently we can decide on your behalf later. That relationship is the foundation. But this article is about what happens once it’s there: how decisions actually get made, one by one.
We don’t hand you a hundred choices and call it collaboration.
“What tile do you want?” sounds simple until you’re staring down several thousand options. That’s not why you hired us.
Instead, we do the searching, comparing, measuring, sourcing and editing behind the scenes. By the time we sit down together, we’ve already weighed the architecture, the rest of the design, your lifestyle and your budget. Then we bring you what belongs in your home — sometimes one clear recommendation, sometimes two worth considering. Either way, you’re starting from a point of view, not a blank page.

And there’s always a why behind the decision.
We don’t want you to love a selection because we told you to. We want you to understand why it works. Maybe that fabric can handle kids and dogs without looking chosen for kids and dogs. Maybe the quieter tile lets the cabinetry become the moment. Maybe the pricier light fixture is the one piece that changes the whole room — while we save elsewhere. Those conversations are where collaboration gets real: you bring an intimate understanding of your family, we bring the trained eye and the market knowledge of how hundreds of choices need to work together.
We make decisions in the right order.
We build the design in layers, making decisions in the order they naturally need to happen. The furniture plan informs the rug. The cabinetry informs the hardware. The architecture influences the lighting. Each decision gives us more information for the next. You don’t need to keep the entire project straight in your head. That’s our job. You just need to be present for the decision in front of you.

And sometimes, we’ll ask you to trust us.
There are inevitably moments in every project when a client pauses. Maybe the wallpaper feels bolder than anything you’ve chosen before. Maybe the vintage piece isn’t something you would have found on your own. Maybe we’re mixing materials in a way that’s difficult to picture before the whole room comes together.
Those are often our favorite moments. Not because we want to push you into something that doesn’t feel like you, but because part of hiring a designer is allowing yourself to see your home differently. We’ve learned the difference between this isn’t me and I never would have thought of this myself.
The first one matters, and we listen. The second one? That’s often where the magic is.

The goal isn’t less collaboration. It’s better collaboration.
You bring us your life, your stories, your preferences and the way you want your home to feel. We bring the vision, expertise and confidence to translate all of that into something cohesive and beautiful. And somewhere along the way, a shorthand develops. We know what you’ll love. You know when to trust us. Decisions become easier because there’s a shared understanding of where we’re going. That’s the kind of collaboration we want. Not endless options. Not design by committee. And definitely not homework. Just a thoughtful process, a trusted relationship, and a home that feels even more like you than you imagined it could.
Beautiful and livable, decision by decision.
