There’s something especially satisfying about transforming one of the hardest-working rooms in the house into a space that’s just as beautiful as it is functional.

Our laundry room was perfectly serviceable before, but it was ready for a refresh—and a few thoughtful changes completely transformed the way the room looks and works.

The Before

The existing laundry room had good bones, including plenty of cabinetry, but the finishes felt dated and the layout wasn’t working as hard as it could for our family.

Rather than starting from scratch, we focused on the updates that would make the biggest impact.

The Transformation

We started by painting the existing cabinetry, which immediately gave the room a fresh new look. We chose the paint color, Farrow & Ball Pigeon. Then we added custom shiplap trim work to bring in texture, character, and a more finished, intentional feel.

Underfoot, new floor tile completely changed the personality of the space. It’s one of those updates that makes you wonder how you ever lived with the “before.” I knew I was going to land on something whimsical and fun; if you can’t have fun with pattern in the laundry room, where can you?? Keeping it black and white was classic, but still playful. This choice was also super affordable: WS Tiles, Porcelain Honeycomb Mosaic.

But perhaps the biggest change was also the most practical.

We replaced our traditional front-load washer and dryer with two sets of side-by-side stackable machines. Being able to run two loads of laundry at once has been a game changer—and proof that sometimes the best design decisions are the ones that make everyday life easier. These units are the LG Washtower in Graphite Steel.

The hardware changes made the biggest impact on the cabinetry transformation as well. I didn’t want to blow the budget for the laundry room space, so I found these knobs with backplate on Amazon. Can’t do much better than a 10 pack for less than $40.

The brass faucet and deep utility sink add to the function of the space. We often specify Blanco sinks for clients, always with rave reviews. For this space we used the Blanco 25″ utility sink in Cinder and a champagne brass pull down faucet.

Making the Everyday Beautiful

The transformation is dramatic, but what I love most is that this room now feels like us. It’s hardworking and highly functional, but it’s also a space that feels considered, beautiful, but not too serious….obviously….

Even the most utilitarian rooms deserve a little attention.
